The IRS is sending Revenue Officers to make unannounced visits to taxpayers that have a previously known tax compliance issues, especially a payroll tax issue, that wasn’t resolved through mail contact. Confirm the identity of a Field Revenue Officer if they come knocking at your door by doing these things…

  • Ask for two forms of official identification. The Revenue Officer should provide a pocket commission and a HSPD-12 card, which is a government-wide standard form of identification of federal employees and contractors. Both forms of identification include a serial number and photo of the IRS employee. Taxpayers have the right to see both forms of identification.
  • Verify the Revenue Officer’s identity by calling a dedicated IRS phone number, which the Revenue Officer should provide.
  • Ask for the Revenue Officer’s manager and their phone number.
  • Know the Taxpayer Bill of Rights by visiting https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p5170.pdf
