GAINESVILLE, Ga. (March 2020) — Rushton, a business planning and accounting firm, has four University of North Georgia students serving internships.

Victor Adame, William Harris, Christina Page and Noah Evans were chosen from a highly competitive group of applicants based on their outstanding academic achievement, extracurricular activities, community involvement and a formal interview process.

The Rushton internship program is designed to give accounting students the opportunity to further their knowledge in preparation for entering the field. This real-world experience will give them insight into the daily tasks and responsibilities of a beginning staff accountant in the firm including a variety of accounting and tax work.

“I didn’t realize how much teamwork was involved,” Harris said. “You always hear that accountants keep to themselves and have little interaction with others, but I don’t see that at all at Rushton. There is an obvious culture of teamwork that I very much enjoy. Without my team, I wouldn’t be learning a fraction of what I have learned during my time here.”

All four talked about the culture of teamwork at Rushton, the willingness of the staff to answer their questions and teach and the advanced technology used at the firm.

During the internship, Adame, a graduate student working toward a Master of Accountancy, is completing individuals tax returns and assisting other associates with tax return preparations.

Harris is a senior double majoring in Accounting and Computer Information Systems. At Rushton, he is working on reviews and audits for a variety of entities and helping the firm transition to a new software platform.

A graduate student, Page is completing her Master of Accountancy at UNG. During her internship, she has assisted with quarterly payroll tasks and printed and assembling W-2s and 1099s. She has also helped with the scanning, verification and preparation of individual tax returns.

Evans is senior seeking Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Accounting. He plans to pursue a Master of Accountancy. His duties during internship has been to assist tax preparers and completed tax returns.

The paid internships span 14 weeks during “tax season.” Interns are embedded among the firm's tax staff so that they experience not only the work tasks, but also the culture of the firm's workplace and the pace during this busy time of year.
